RoboCup Football Championships 2013

The Robocup robot football world championship has kicked off in the Netherlands. Over 2,500 contestants from around 40 countries are expected to compete in this year's Robocup championship where robots battle without assistance from humans, in a bid to develop new technology.

Eindhoven Technical University crew Member Robin Soetens said: "With these soccer games we are trying to develop new technology, because soccer is a really difficult game for robots, of course, and this new technology can be applied in many other fields of robotics."

Robocup has set itself a goal that by 2050, a team of football playing robots will be able to beat the human world champions. Report by Sarah Kerr.
